Several people say that the new 15" powerbook has a very bright screen, brighter even from the 17" one. Someone even compared it to the Apple 20" display (sorry, I don't remember where I did read that, I think an Appleinsider discussion). What is your opinion? How this display compares to other ones available today (Mac and PC laptops)?

Much brighter than the old Ti screens (I was embarassed by my 667's screen) but still not quite up to par with a new PC laptop. I thought it would be as good but when I put it up against a friend's Toshiba the other day I still came up a bit short.

Maybe display thickness is a factor? A more heavy and/or thick display can have stronger backlighting. What about viewing angles (vertical-horizontal)? This is a feature very little, if at all, documented.

The screen is very bright at full brightness, as in bright enough to read a newspaper on the other side of a closed room. I keep it at about3/4 bars of brightness.

Viewing angle is wide; perhaps 120 degrees horizontally, but colors invert when viewed at more than20 degrees off perpendicular vertically.
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

20 degrees? Doesn't sound very good...

Some Toshibas supposedly have state-of-the-art TFT screens, more brilliant and with a deeper black than almost anything else out there, but at the price of a lot of reflections on the screen. Did you see any of this?

My 15 is much brighter than a six-month old Sony Z1AP.

Here's a tip: Open the display pref and click on the color tab. Scroll to the bottom and change it to s-RGB profile. You'll get more contrast. Many people prefer this setting on the powerbook LCD. You can use it for awhile and then change it back to the LCD setting, just to determing which setting you prefer.

If you want more sophisticated calibration, you can download the shareware SuperCal.

Many people rave about it, and I've tried it, but I'm back to the s-RGB setting.
