the only thing wrong with the ibook (besides being unable to use Final Cut Pro 4 and I guess the superdrive might not work that well) is the screen.

a nice widescreen... 13.4 screen would be nice... better than that... follow Sony's lead and make bright screen.

the ibook screen is good, but it could be better. I see btter screens on PC's which stinks to say.

It's not the size as much as the sharpness.

And enough of the CD-ROM crap. I'm so tired of that.

They all should have at least combo drives, and superdrives shoudl be standard IMHO ( i realize they make not work that well with g3, but I don't see why)

999 for a 1ghz ibook with combo drive and super bright screen.... slot loading disc drive you say?

Okay!

Add some color, cool!

Well sounds great! But you can say good bye to the affordability of the iBook.

I think the combo drive will reach 999 or less someday. But I have no doubt the cd-rom will still be around at 799 or less when it does.

Face it, in an education enviorment. You dont want your students watching a DVD when they're supposed to be working on their term papers.

And I have doubts about the ability to scale the iBook to many screen sizes like the powerbook and still retaining style and usabilty. I consider the 14 inch a fiasco. Complete waste of space.

12.1" is fine. I don't think an extra inch or so will get you that much more screen real estate. Higher resolution will, however.

$999 for a new notebook computer as nice as the iBook is a great price. Maybe the base model might come with a CDRW drive.

As for the screen, Apple needs to look at the new screen technologies that are making their way into PC laptops. X-brite and others but remember that Apple is painfully slow implementing newer and better displays into their portable line. Remember the PIsmo PowerBooks were 1024 x 768 14.1" screens that looked pale and washed out compared to the high res screens on PC's of the time.
Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

I agree. The iBook should get a better screen. I would welcome either a brighter screen or a wide screen (both would be nice). It would be great to have the midpriced ibook to have a wide 13" screen of some sort. It's perfect for watching DVDs on the road or inflight, and FCP would of course benefit from it. I've found using IM, it's great to have a widescreen.

But what would be of equal improtance would be better screen for daylight use. I'm sure (I think) there's some sort of technology that could bring reflective and/or passthru light technology for use in daylight. Is there such a thing as a uniderictional passthru and reflective substrate? Currently, the iBook screen is barely visible enough to use when direct light hits the screen (at which point you can turn the back lit off since it doesn't provide any help).

I say ditch the 14 inch iBook (I've always hated how that one looked" and build a better 14+ inch iBook. The 14 inch ibook is by no means a step up between the iBook 12 and the powerbook line. The only thing good about it isit has the longest battery life of any portable. apple makes.

But speed, specs, and price considered, you're paying so much more for blown up 1024x768 resolution.

Can't wait till the 14 inch is put to sleep. Monstrosity.

I was playing around with a toshiba laptop in a store the other day. It had an awsome lcd.... had some kind of coating on it to give extra contrast and sharpness. Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing Apple go with something like that.
