Mac Mates,
On October 1st, at around 5:00pm ET, I went to the Apple Store to and picked up a Powerbook 12" SuperDrive. I owned an iBook 800, 640MB Ram, ComBo prior to the AlBook. As for the 2nd day, here is a comparison of two great machines:
AlBook 12" iBook 12"
CPU G4 1GHz G3 800 MHz
VRam 32 MB 32 MB
Installed 256 MB 640 MB
Ram (that
I compared)
Optical Slot Drive
Drive 2x SuperDrive Combo Drive
The heat issue has been resolved in the new Powerbook. The heat produced on around the left side pad is close/same as the one in the iBook. It doesn't bother you at all.
The screen of the Powerbook seems much crisp than the one of the iBook.
The Aluminum Case is stronger, more stable than the case of the iBook.
The Slot drive of the Powerbook is much, much more efficient, and fun to use. It is hard to eject/insert discs into iBook when its not on a flat service.
The keyboard; another perfect aspect of the 12" AlBook. It is much quiter, fun to type on. Beats the iBook.
Even I am comparing a maxed out iBook and 256 MB Powerbook, Powerbook is much more faster than iBook. However, 256 MB is just not enough to work on 3-5 applications at the same.
One more drawback. AlBook comes with 10.2.7 installed, which has several bugs. Most significant is the battery indicator. It is really unacceptable. Apple should fix it in no time. Most probably, they won't produce another update for 10.2. Panther should be coming to the market in about 2-3 weeks, now, hence the bugs would be gone in Panther.
Regards,
SG

I did it! I finally pulled the trigger after weeks of agonizing; first over whether I should do an iBook or PB, then whether to go with Combo or Super drive.
I finally decided to do a flying "Hail Mary" and went for gold by getting the Superdrive option and I'm waiting for the thing to complete it's first full charge before I head out the door on a biz trip.
Haven't cracked open the screen yet but I can tell you that sitting next to my work Powerbook G4/500, this thing is simply stunning looking and makes the old Ti's look positively clunky (no offense to owners).
The aluminum finish has a nice sheen to it that isn't quite there with the titanium finish and I simply love how smooth the case is with no protrusions.
Cheers.

fener: Both LCDs are XGA TFT screens, are you sure they aren't the same? The albook should have a brighter screen (more lumens) but they should both be the same sharpness.
Hey, you're the perfect candidate to test ibook vs albook battery life and airport range. X-Charge gives you a graph of battery life, so you could stick a movie in both, etc. MacStumbler is supposed to work with the AE card now, so you can get some good airport range figures with the 2 models sitting side by side. Also, you could check bandwidth at each distance by going to:
http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
No rush, no pressure, just love to hear the results if and whenever you decide to try it...
