who says that means a 'FREE' update to Panther? i believe when Jag was released, it was reduced in price to people with those coupons, but not free.

Well the ship date on my PB is between 2nd and 6th. Fingers crossed it comes with 10.3. I know that some people have seen a delay in PBs lately, maybe because of this.

Some have said that in the past, if you buy 30 days before an OS you get the "free" update. Some have said that you ONLY get the update if you buy AFTER the new OS is released. Which has it actually been?
In any case, the "free" updates have cost $20 for "shipping"... a little steep, but less than $129.

i think we can at least expect a rebate on panther.
i mean, my pbook is supposed to be delivered on 10.10. and i see no reason why i should have to pay another $150 for panther, which is said to be released on or before 10.24., that is not more than 2 weeks after i get the pbook!
i'd be very disappointed if apple won't give us all at least a decent rebate!

Remember you'll also have to wait some time for your rebate copy.

Last August I received my new DVI 667 and in it were the upgrade disks for Jag, I think it was August the 7th, way before it was released here in Australia. I've just ordered a 17 inch PB as a replacement, it arrives on the 7th I may be optimistic but at least I'm hoping for a discount coupon...

maybe since they borked the 10.2.8 update they'll give the new PB owners who are past the 30 day deadline a break

Well, good news for the new Powerbook owners, but I don't think it'll be free as well, I would say at a discount price, but you never know, so just keep those fingers crossed.

I'd be overly satisfied if those included coupons made it cheaper at all!

Unlikely to be free. If my memory serves me well, Jaguar was $20 s & h only to those who bought Macs after the official release date. There might have been a "bought 10 days prior" to release date clause, I don't remember.
Catch 22: that applies to your purchase date: not your shipping date. Get it? Hint: Remember those long shipping delays? Those don't count as your purchase date.

Not only that, if 10.3 upgrade discs are anything like the 10.2 upgrade discs, they were useless for installing "from scratch". Call me peculiar, but I'd prefer to rebuild from zero for a new system rather than upgrade.

I wholeheartedly agree. IMO it is always better to rebuile from scratch.

They did contain full installers - they were just disabled. I'm not sure how, but it is possible to make copies of the upgrade CDs that will perform a full install.
Doing an upgrade install is stupid anyway. You should be able to do a full install without any workarounds if you get the upgrade CD. But maybe Apple realized that Panther is too different from Jaguar to justify an upgrade, and therefore decided to skip the upgrade CDs entirely and go straight to making people buy boxed copies.

I bought an iMac in July, 2002, right after the Expo when the release date for Jaguar was announced. It was also announced that any Macs purchased from that date on would get a "free" upgrade to Jaguar for the cost of shipping and handling; $20. While I got the upgrade, I never felt like it was quite "whole" since it was just an upgrade disk. Subsequent reinstalls of the OS required installing OS X 10.1, then upgrading to 10.2, then upgrading to 10.2.2, etc. What a pain.
Having just bought a new Rev B 17" PowerBook, I'm not sure I'll want to pay $20 for an upgrade disk. I'll probably go ahead and buy a retail copy of Panther for $129 or whatever, to get the whole shabang. My loss for being an early adopter.
