my wife was thoughtful enough to find the elusive 512mb chip upgrade for the new 17 inch powerbook.
the install was easy
after i rebooted the machine
i looked at my system profiler
and it DID show 1024mb of RAM
BUT.....
the original RAM is noted as J20 standard
while the new RAM is J23 REVERSED
i called APPLE
they say that because the RAM was recognized that it does NOT matter about the world "REVERSED"
what do YOU all think abou that
the computer works fine
it recognizes the full 1024mb of RAM
it is NOT noticeably faster.. really
but that word "reversed" bothers me
you all know that there is NOT 2 ways to install a chip
or, is there?
thanks in advance
greg

"Reversed" could mean anything, I have no idea. Did you buy it from a source that claims compatibility with that PowerBook specifically, and follows Apple specs? If so, I wouldn't worry.
Speed ups will be in the form of fewer/briefer beachballs and pauses between certain actions: because the laptop can rely on RAM more and HD less. (Which also helps HD life and battery life.)

If you look above the ram modules in question, you will see that is says location.
I think it is in the reverse slot opposed to the Ti-book's Top and botom slots.
I am not sure, but i think it is all about the location.

that was the explanation that the APPLE rep offered after putting me on hold for 10 minutes and asking someone else. no one was sure, but i guess i'll have to go with it.
the thing is i just didn't want to have a $300.00 chip in the computer that isn't doing anything. but i guess that won't be the case here
thanks again

This is how it is in all 17" PowerBooks with 2 SO-DIMMs I have seen (including my ex-PB17). I'm not sure if reversed is standard terminology, but you shouldn't be worried about that.

It's just the way Apple named the ram slots - one is "normal," one is "reversed." Imagine that you're looking at two ram sticks standing perpendicular to the motherboard " ____|__|____". Now imagine that you put the ram in those two slots the same way - tab toward one edge. Now imagine that there isn't enough room on the motherboard or case for them both to lay flat the same way - so the one on the left leans to the left and is flat against the motherboard, while the one on the right goes the other way -- on, in other words, it's reversed. "____\__/____" to "____=__=____".
Cool huh?
