I heard about this on YML. THe people over at Daystar have a G4 upgrade available for the Pismo. It needs to be factory installed so you have to send it too them, but it is supposed to take only a day.
Also they claim an upgraded model runs cooler and has more battery life than a standard Pismo.
Since I have an old Pismo sitting around, this might be a cool option to prolong its life.

Got any idea why their 550Mhz model is alleged to be 2x as fast as a Pismo400, but the 500Mhz is only 1.5 as fast?

G4 upgrades aren't worth it. That interview completely ignored the fact that PowerLogix has had 900mhz G3 upgrades for quite some time, which will blow away any G4 upgrade available on the market.
For someone with a Pismo 500, paying to get Velocity Engine and an additional 50mhz isn't worth it.

i dunno, i am planning on doing the daystar upgrade.
the powerlogic g3 may be faster overall...it's also user-installed, and generates more heat (just under the keyboard)
i WANT the G4; for finalcut, photoshop, etc.
in my research (lots of googling), seems worth it.
plus the resale value of a G4/pismo might be greater.
mid november, AFTER panther.
will report back

G4 upgrades for Pismos are not such a good deal. I upgraded mine to the PowerLogix G3 900 MHz instead and I don't regret it. I also contacted PowerLogix this morning to ask about Panther compatibility and I was told that:
The final version of Panther has not been released yet, however we don't expect any problems.
I ordered Panther today so I guess we shall see...
For those who also run linux, with some tweaking/patching to the kernel, you can also get full support for the 900 G3 (including frequency scaling).
