I've just done the spanning hack on my iBook and used a friend's CRT to test it, everything worked great, I'm getting a new display soon.

When I open Photoshop I can move all the toolbars etc over to the external (it's got higher resolution and nicer to work on) but is there any way to be able to use the menubar on the external?
I doubt it can be moved across but is there a toolbar which duplicates it or something?
It would be nice to be able to totally use Photoshop on the external display and not have to move back to use the menubar.
Thanks

simple. just drag the toolbar over to the other monitor. Photoshop 7 has a workspace feature that allows you to save presets. I have a dual setup that moves all of my menus and toolabars to specific areas when I'm hooked up to an external monitor. You may also want to move the main OS menubar over to the CRT. Just open the display pref pane and drag the little menubar over to the appropriate monitor.

Great, thanks a lot arclight.
I wasn't sure how to move the OS X menubar but now I know I can do it in System Preferences>Displays in the Arrangement pane.
Now I just have to wait for my new display to arrive.

just a tip- when you're spanning and want to take your ibook on the road, make sure and put your ibook to sleep before disconnecting the vga adapter cable. If you don't wait until the sleep light begins to pulse you may run into some bizarre problems. Nothing permanent but the video may get wonky or the desktop may not go back into spanning without a restart.

Ok thanks, I didn't have that problem when I tested it briefly, but I guess it might mess up the video if I have the menu bar on the external display and pull the adaptor.
