I'm 99% certain that I showed the backlit keyboard feature to a friend of mine when I first got a 15" AU PowerBook (1.25Ghz). Since then, I've installed Panther, reinstalled 10.2.7, then updated to 10.2.8. In all three situations, the backlit keyboard hasn't worked: when I hit any of the three function key buttons, the icon on screen shows a circle with a cross through it. I've zapped the PRM and reset the PMU and neither helped.
Has anyone else seen this? The next step is taking it to a repair place but I'm curious to know if anyone else has seen this.
regards,
Fergus

That's bizarre. I would call Apple and ask them. If it's a defect, they will be able to fix it under warranty.

Here are a couple possibilities,
1. First off make sure that there is no ambient light, try covering up the speaker vents.
2. Go to the system preferences then the keyboard and mouse panel click on the keyboard panel and make sure that the box is checked next to the text that says, "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions.
You said you installed panther? Are you a developer? Panther has not yet been released to the public. Let us know.

Well, this is interesting. It's working now. Since I reinstalled 10.2.x, I hadn't tried the test in a dark room because, with Panther, it didn't matter (the first time I noticed it wasn't working, I was in a room that was almost pitch black). However, with 10.2.x, the keyboard does illuminate in a dark room. What's interesting is that in a lighted room, I get the circle with the cross through it - just like I was getting with Panther in the dark room.
Hmm...none of this makes sense. I'll have to reinstall Panther and try again. It sure doesn't seem like a hardware problem.
BTW, I work at Adobe, hence the access to Panther.
regards,
fh
