Trainiable is to cat as ability to live without food is to human.

On appearance:
The non-opaque (or crystal) iBooks are older and have the original case. The "white" plastic on the top and bottom of the case are actually clear plastic which is painted white on the inside.
The opaque iBooks have a white plastic case (the plastic is actually white and is not painted).

Also, on the opaque iBooks, the font is different for the iBook text. In addition, I believe the opaque iBooks all support Quartz Extreme.

Some of the later non-opaque iBooks had the new font (which I like more than the old one). My 800 MHz Combo iBook was like that.

Yes, however, there are some non-opaque iBooks that also support QE. The 600/CD, 700/Combo, and 800/Combo are all non-opaque and they all support QE. The only opaque models are the 700/CD, 800/CD and 900/Combo.

I personally prefer the look of the older, non-opaque ones. But you really have to compare them in person.

This is a thread at AppleInsider discussing the differences, with pictures.
