Hi, since Airport Extreme cards don't work on old Powerbooks would it be better to go with a third party card rather than the old airport card?

Depends how you value:
(1) Local-network file transfer speed
(2) Slim-and-trim appearance

Do you have a network you'll be using this Pismo in? Do you regularly transfer large files (music, video, graphics) between your various local computers?

If you're just using the Pismo for internet access, then 802.11g speeds will make no difference whatsoever, so you might want the Airport card to avoid stubby antennae.

I certainly wouldn't think so. The OEM card is internal and works better than the newer ones in terms of signal strength.

We have a Pismo 500, Ti 667 Rev. B and an origional 12 in G4 Powerbook all on an Airport Extreme network at home. The Pismo more than holds it's own. If you get the aftermarket card, it will just clog up your PC card slot. They should be about the same cost on eBay.
