I just got a 20 gig drive from my friends computer, but I want to clean it totally, what's the best way to do that? Should I use the os x cd? Also, is the os x cd for a g4 the same as a g3?

I assume that by "cleaning it totally" you only mean format it so that data on it (including files from "previous" filesystem(s)) is not accessible using off-the-shelf/freely downloadable software. In that case, simply use Mac OS X's disk utility with the "zero fill" option.

If you want a US Department of Defense standards compliant secure erase, look at "KillDisk" (erases by writing random information over multiple passes):

A "lite" version of killdisk is free. It works really well, but you need a PC.

There are other ways, but I think disk utility should suffice.

That sounds good, but i don't have the original mac os x cd. However, my brother does, is it possible to use his for the zero fill option? Or are there copyright things to stop that, i.e. passwords or serials?
