I'm currently in the position of buying a CD-RW/DVD combo drive (with bezel) pulled from a 14.1 inch iBook. I want to put it in my 12.1 inch iBook. Are the drives the same size? Would this work? Also, I assume doing it myself would void warranty. If this is the case, do you think by taking the parts to an Apple store, they'd do it for me? I want to keep this puppy under warranty but I'm ready for that CD burning and DVD watching bliss.

The drives are exactly the same, being standard laptop drives. The only issue would be whether the bezel is the same between the 12" and the 14" but you'll soon find out if you make the change. Doing this will definately void your warranty, anything other than replacing the battery, the ram or installing an airport card will void your warranty - mainly because those are the only things you can do without taking the laptop apart. I would doubt you could take the parts to an AppleStore to do, they'd probably want to supply them themselves, but it's worth a try. However, as long as you download and print out a guide on performing the change, and stick all the screws on the printed pages as you take it apart, you won't have any troubles. I just changed over the hard drive in my clamshell for a new one and whilst it took a while and I had to be VERY careful in noting down where every screw came from it was all plain sailing. I'd say go for it. The new drive in my clamshell is such a radical change over the old one, completely silent and much faster, makes it feel like it's brand new
Cheers Ry

If the Apple Store wouldn't do it, could I get a buddy, who is a certified Apple laptop tech, to do it without voiding the warranty? I assume that's the part that's necessary... getting a certified guy to do it. But I'm not sure exactly.
Anyone who knows?
