Hello all, this is my very first posting so I expect loads of informative responses...or else I will be chagrinned.

Just received my PB/15'/1.25/5200rpm/1GigRAM.

He he he he.

I intend to do some fairly serious editing with this sucker (am weening myself off AVID at long last).

I will be employing FCP 4 and DVD Studio Pro 2...

What would be helpfull now is to get comments/suggestions from fellow editors who are using the same machine as mine - on what sort of setup/additional hardware you use to create the "best" editing environment/workflow.

Also, what if any realtime effects can I expect?

Also, what is the result on realtime effects if I add a 800 firewire drive to the mix?

Also, interested to hear your general feedback/feelings regarding editng with an apple laptop.

Give it to me straight people, I can take it.

Ta Ta now,

ClawDog

I couldn't live without my TiBook (1ghz, SD) and FCP4! I just finished a 15 minute project with 4 layers of video (After Effects animations and Photoshop gfx) and 6 audio layers without as much as a hiccup. I have a Lacie 120gb firewire (400) drive that has been rock solid, and a Fantom drives 120gb that has dropped a few frames a time or two.
As far as real time, all the effects in bold letters in your effects tab should preview in real time, but ALL your effects will have to be rendered before you output. As far as I know, firewire 800 won't give you any real time advantages, that's all handled by the processor.
What flavor of Avid are you weening from? I cut on a Media Composer at my "day job" and do all my freelance work in FCP4. If I could get Avid's "3D warp" and the Sapphire plugins in FCP, life would be darn near perfect!
Congrats on your new machine...I'm sure you'll love editing on it!

p.s. get a good set of headphones!

Entire TV ads and documentaries have been created entirely on PowerBooks with less ower than yours. You should be set!

I just got FCPro 4 myself (love Soundtrack!) and haven't done heavy editing since my TurboCube days... but I'd consider one of these jog/shuttle products:

http://griffintechnology.com/products/powermate

http://www.macally.com/new/new_keypoint.html (Weird!)

You could consider a second display, of course, when not on the road. And external high-speed drives or RAIDs are common for this kind of work. I think someone well-known makes a battery-powered video RAID, and there are FireWire 800 portable 7200rpm drives--I just came across the Spark 800 today.

Then there are the ugly (but maybe useful?) color-coded external keyboards for Final Cut Pro--or kits to customize an Apple keyboard (not sure if it works with the new wired/wireless ones):

And more RAM someday might help--I really couldn't say if it would be noticeable.

Finally, I'd want a Bluetooth mouse with any PowerBook, but there's not a lot to choose from yet. A mouse with jog-shuttle could be neat!
