I have a 15" AlBook. I like the machine.. it's beautiful... but I am beginning to doubt whether I have a made the right decision buying it.

My usage: lectures, in library, software dev, multiple apps (like the 15" LCD size)

The reasons that are making me consider having the 15" replaced are:
  • While pretty portable, its size makes it a bit big to take out and work whenever I need it.
  • I can get a nice G5 desktop towards the end of next year if I spend less money on a laptop. And somehow I believe a smaller laptop + good desktop solution would be better than having just a 15" laptop.
  • Battery life on the 12"ers is pretty impressive compared to my ~ 3 hours.
  • I have white spots, so need to deal with Apple anyways... but also the fact that this is 1st Rev and it is showing (all the problems mentioned in the forums) is making me a bit nervous

It might be the fact that there's so much negative stuff about these AlBooks out there that is making me depressed and making me "see" that this wasn't a wise choice. But I dunno...

Anyways, I was thinking the two most likely candidates for a departure from the 15" would be:

1) 12" Powerbook 1Ghz... Definitely the Schwarzenegger of this "recall": 60Gig/Combo/512MB Kingston --> US$1820 (buying thru canadian edu and adding ram myself)

2) IBM Thinkpad X Series... And in this corner we have our Cruz Bustamente. I can get it educational.. really compact.. but it comes down to a price that's pretty close to the 15" and thus, not ideal in that I won't be able to afford a good G5 next Christmas

Any advice on going through with the change or any reinstatement of faith in my 15" AlBook will be greatly appreciated.

I personally love my 15'. It is defiantly fast enough for me.

Also with the new 10.2.8 I get 3.45 hours no joke. before I got around 2.45.

Panther is around the corner and I bet it will enhance things further.

I would not worry about what you read on these board, mostly because the people without problems rarely post.

You can bet that most people have flawless powerbooks (me).

Finally the 15' is actually a revision b' . If you can tell it mimichs the 17' rev a to the tee. Just a few internal differences is all but the general look and technology is the same. like anything else I like to protect it with applecare though

Also I bet that an upgraded battery is in the works. Batteries are very easy to upgrade so even if apple does not take the liberty to up the mah then you can be sure that some after market places will.
