Yes, you will get Panther for free. It'll come to you in mail like the monthly cds they sent you.

as a student developer, you get a one time 20% discount on apple equipment, one order with restrictions (such as one cpu and one screen) with pretty much as much accessories as you want
but one time only....ever, unless you upgrade to premiere member or something
not a bad deal for $99, saved me damn near $600 on my first apple purchase (17" rev a PB and 20" screen and a few other things)
all you have to do is prove you are a student in college

Well I am a legitimate student and do have interests in the developer area. I do it as a hobby not a job...
Its not all that great of deal for me since I am charged sales tax...

heh... good so i'm not the only one taking advantage of apple (although their pricing for non edu people are just ridiculous - guess it all balances out)

How lame...I emailed this to them this morning after the Oct 24th announcement:
"Hi! I'm a Student ADC Member and my membership doesn't expire until March
2004...my question is this: Will I get a free copy of OS X 10.3 "Panther" in my
monthly mailings? Thanks! "
and got this.......
Re: Apple Products
Hello Darren,
Thank you for contacting the Apple Developer Connection regarding Mac OS X
"Panther".
It is Apple's policy not to comment on unannounced products or products under
development, whether they exist or not; nor is it our policy to discuss release
dates.
Product announcements are generally accompanied by press releases, which often
give many of the specifications people are interested in:
Apple Press Info
< http://www.apple.com/pr>
Press Release Library
< http://www.apple.com/pr/library/>
New product information can generally also be found on our Hot News web site:

I hope that the above information is of help to you. Please let me know if you
have any questions or need further assistance.
Best regards,
Ryan Juranek

I read this on my student dev. ML several days ago.. someone wrote..
Subject: Re: Student membership...
Keep in mind a few things. The student developer program is designed so that
us poor starving students can develop and have access to some of the tools
Apple has for a low cost. Its not designed to be a means of free or cheap
software with no development behind them. My guess is that abuse of this
would drastically change the way the program works.
On a second note, if you figure 1 major update per year, then the 69
education store cost of a major OS X update ia far less than the 99 you
spend for Student Developer. While it has been true that we get updates, the
student mailings can be many weeks or even a month or so behind actual
releases. In cases like Jaguar and Panther, many students still went out and
purchased it.
If your sole reason for joining the developer program is for the 'free
software' then you are abusing the privileges of the Apple and the program
and should reconsider your motives. If you want the latest libraries, tools,
and updates and hope to get your feet wet as a developer for a great
platform, then the program is for you.

Well since I own 2 Macs anyway, I'm most likely going to order a retail copy of Panther w/ my EDU Discount, and then just hope for a free copy from ADC. Either way, I'll be covered...I don't really wanna wait over a month for Panther, plus $69 ain't bad.

Did you get 10.1 quickly after it was released?

I think for the last couple years Apple has been sending out copies of the OS X versions a little after it's been released... given that Panther is out on the 24th, and the mailings typically ship end of month, it's possible it could be part of the next ADC mailing.
I highly doubt that Apple would stop sending out copies of system software to the student developers. FYI, I got a copy of Jaguar last year via student ADC mailing shortly after release, and also another copy about half a year later in another mailing(like 10.2.3 or something).
Be patient and wait Or, in Assassyn's case, give $69 to Apple
