I've learned a lot from reading this forum, but I've never posted before. So I thought I would post and try to put some minds at ease. My new Powerbook is PERFECT!
I have the new 15" 1.25 Al book with Superdrive (standard config). I ordered it Sept. 18 through the online education store with standard shipping, and it arrived 6 days later. Since then I've been using it constantly.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I do not have any of the problems that have been discussed here. My latch has been working perfectly since day 1. No dead pixels, no white spots. My battery indicator initially showed a max. of 2:30, but in reality I've been getting 3:15 out of the battery. And now the indicator occasionally shows 3:07. I haven't yet started doing any labor-intensive video or audio work, but I think 3;15 is pretty good for surfing the web wirelessly with Airport while listening to iTunes and working in Office documents and spreadsheets. I'm eager to see if Panther improves my battery life, but I'm not distressed about what I've gotten so far..
Speaking of Airport, I also got an Airport Extreme Base Station at the same time, and it's been flawless. My reception has been steady and strong. I've read that many people needed to downgrade their firmware, but I haven't had to do that. I even got my husband's Win2K IBM Thinkpad up and running wirelessly, even with encryption enabled on the AEBS. Granted, it took a full 2 days to make it work, but that's because of Win2K. We'd change one setting on his computer to try and make it work, and it would crash. Meanwhile, my Powerbook was working smoothly online the whole time. After hours and hours, we finally got the Thinkpad online.
No heat issues here. I routinely work with the machine in my lap (wearing shorts) and I work until the battery runs all the way down. It's gotten warm but not uncomfortably so. I've never heard the fan come on, and this machine is SO much quieter than my 867 Quicksilver Powermac. My husband's Thinkpad gets hotter than my Albook.
This is my first laptop, so I can't compare it to previous models. But I'm absolutely thrilled with my purchase so far. And my 867 Quicksilver is still going strong -- I've never had one problem with that machine, despite tons and tons of work with ProTools, Quark, Photoshop, Premiere and iDVD, so I don't expect to have any with this Powerbook.
Thanks again to everyone who participates in this forum. I've learned a lot from this place!
