I've just received my very first Mac computer: Powerbook 12" 1GZ stock model.
I love the keyboard it's so comfortable to type on
I really like this change from WIndows to Apple.
The pb is running quite quietly and I have so much exploring to do with my pb.
I am a new switcher I bet I'll have a lot to learn from Macnners, I hope you guys will bare with me if I ask too many questions

Actually I have a few questions right now:
1) I heard there is a system wide spelling checker. Where should I look into to use this feature?
2) Where do I go for updates and stuff?
3) Besides versionchecker, are there any other websites where I can try out freewares and sharewares and stuff?

EDIT: One more question. I notice when I am viewing a pdf file online, the pdf is downloaded onto the desktop. Now where do I go to disable this? I want it downloaded to the temp. folder if there is one. I dont want it on my desktop.

Thanx.

Congrats man! I've actually been eyeing out those 12". It'd be cool to have a little PB family in my dorm. But that'd be overkill.

As for your questions, here's what I know:

1. The spellchecker is generally enabled on a program by program case (at least that's what I've experienced). Certain applications (like Adium) will come with it turned on. If not, most of the time it's a simple matter of going in to Preferences and turning it on. Piece o' cake.

2. For Apple updates, you just need to run Software Updater. Go into System Preferences and you should see a little blue globe with arrows around it. Click on it and it'll do all the work for you.

3. As for websites, I really only check VersionTracker. I rarely do that though. I know there's another one, but I've forgotten its name.

Hope this helps and I definitely hope you enjoy your 12".

^Thanks to sealobo

Congratulations and welcome!

1. The built-in spell-checker is typically controlled from the Edit menu. (Not every app uses it.)

2. System Preferences > Software Update. (In Panther, S.U. is right in the Apple menu.)

3. Check macgamefiles.com for games.

4. You can control where downloads (including PDFs) go from your browser's Preferences. (Every app has it's on Preferences in its menu.) In Safari, it's in Preferences > General.

Ask away! The General and Help forums at maccentral.com are good places to ask too.

BTW I posted some OS X tips for Windows users:

www.macupdate.com is a great place to check out the free software or shareware.

check out this pdf plug in. make sure you read the readme for instruction. What it does basically is to display the whole pdf file on safari. it works very well.
