If anyone out there is wondering if they should take the plunge and buy the new 12" powerbook, go for it. Mine is perfect in every way. I upgraded from an ibook 500 dvd and it is quite an upgrade. The new machine is basically a slightly sleeker, noticeably faster, more refined laptop than the ibook. The keyboard is great. The screen has no bad pixels. The battery lasts over three hours. Airport has similar range to the ibook. There are no heat issues whatsoever. I went with the 80gb drive, superdrive, bought extra ram from a 3rd party (768 total). With 10.3 coming out in two weeks - I am like a kid in a candy store. Life is good. If you are on the fence, just buy the thing and spend your time getting rid of all of your other computer crap on ebay - everything you need is in this little 4.6 lb package.

I couldn't have said it better myself. This is my first mac (unless you count the 1st gen G3 all in one that I salvaged from the school dumpster 233mhz)

This G4 is everything I have ever needed. Switching from linux was tough. Open Source is so nice to be around. but hell...I can even run that stuff!

My 12"PB is almost perfect
other than not closing completely (right corner is up about 2mm), it's perfect.
the battery life is about 3 1/2 hrs after calibration under not heavy use. I've never owned a laptop before so I dont know if it's good or not. But I think it's already long enough compared to my friend's "Emachine".

I could say mine was absolutely perfect if it weren't for the cheap feel to the slot loading mechanism. I dont like the disc kind of "clunks" down when you drop it in. I was expecting it to be more like my car stereo where it would take the disc out of my hand rather than making me physically push it all the way in.

It just feels cheap.

I'm loving mine as well. I can't find a thing wrong with it, not for lack of trying. It's perfect. No dead pixels. No wobble. Good battery life.

Just got my Rev B combo drive model this week. It's my first laptop, and I'm upgrading from my 400mhz B&W G3, circa 1999. This thing is damn nice....I'm going to rip out the HDs from the G3 and put them into firewire cases, put my old crt monitor up as a 2nd unit, and have the PB be my main machine from now on. I just want a new version of the BookEndz dock and all will be well...

I say everyone contact the BookEndz people and request that they make a dock for the new 12" PB. They're "considering" it, they say.

Yes, you will need to get a firewire drive enclosure, which you can find at numerous places. The cheapest is www.eshop.macsales.com They have some listed on their firewire page. You will need to format the drive for mac, however once you plug it in the first time, os x might tell you it cannot read the disc, and give an option to initialize it. If it doesn't then you can just go to utilities and open up disc utility. You can partition and format it in there. BTW, I got my 1ghz 12" 2 days after they came out and I love it. A girl in my class got the 2.2ghz dell insipron and my powerbook simply smokes it in every way. You get what you pay for.
