I wanted to run norton on my machine just to make sure it did not need a defrag and check the system but it will not boot to the cd? It is Norton 8.0 and its not a burned cd.
Anyone else?

The problem I believe is that the Norton 8 disk uses an older version of OS X then your Powerbook can support. I tried my friends disk, and it did attempt to boot, but hung before anything ever came on the screen. I figure Norton will probably release a new version to go along with Panther, and will support the new Powerbooks. I can wait till then to pick up a copy, as I doubt my drive will fragment to any noticible levels for a few months anyhow.

Drakino has it right--the old CD just doesn't have the system software or system enablers capable of starting up the new models. This is where 2 partitions come in handy. You boot on one partition to diagnose the opposite partition.

I'm also planning on having Jaguar on one partition and Panther on the other. There'll be a few inconveniences when booted into Jaguar, because Quicktime clips will find the newer version on the Panther partition (the Panther Quicktime version probably won't play in Jaguar), but you can work around that by dragging the clips onto the Jaguar version.

You do not have to defrag disks anymore.

If you feel the need to run any utility on your mac, I recommend to my clients Disk Warrior over anything else presently, especially anything Symantec (Norton Utilities) currently has availalbe. It has a simplified interface and a more "trustworthy" way of cleaning your directory. It works and boots both OS 9 and OS X machines and, although I wouldn't recommend it at this point, it does seem to work fine on Panther as well.

Cheers.

Good advice.

I would advise to ditch Norton and buy Diskwarrior... it is superior in every way.

The correct pronounciation of "Norton" is with a silent "rton".

Norton used to be good under 9 but is dangerous under X (Norton Disk Damager). Had good luck Disk Warrior but the supplied CD will not boot any of the latest generation of Powerbooks. Wonder how much the upgrade disk will cost...

I had horrible experiences with Norton (under 9.0) so I completely disagree. It has always sucked. TechTool was great, and so was Disk Warrior. I have had Norton hose my OS9 systems.
