Apple integrated this "update" with two essential security patches. One was for ssh, and I don't remember what the other was :-)

Also, Powerbook owners have been reporting better battery life, some have reported speed-ups on some tasks, etc.

Besides, it's free.

I believe bluetooth support for mouse and keyboard comes with the PBs without having to download 10.2.8

Also, there are just a lot of little changes, the whole sum of which might be more than the sum of the individual parts. And it's generally a painless process (unless you lack broadband), so why not?

10.2.8 has new modem drivers, too.

But it messed up my pB17 -- now all sound is mute -- so I'll be upgrading to 10.3 as soon as it's out.

In some ways, your question diminishes the concerns that 10.3 will be better in all ways over 10.2. For some, 10.2.8 is going to be the best way to stay safe with security updates, etc., until the version of 10.3 comes out that resolves their particular problem.

Why install 10.2.8?

'Cause I'm not buying 10.3 for a while in protest...

Oh and 10.2 works just fine for me for the moment... I am productive, crash free, and stable, if not totally snappy (tm)! So why change?

For my needs, there is no 'killer' feature which sets 10.3 as a *must have* piece of software.

Maybe in a few months I'll upgrade. Until then 10.2.8 will do me fine....

Peace,

Marc

Why patch the 10.2.8? Stability.

Why get any version of 10.2.8 at all? Extended battery life, reliable battery life reporting, stability of CD-R burning. Other things like the ssh vulnerability which I don't understand yet.
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

Not everyone wants the new operating system. Some people will continue to do fine with 10.2. When jaguar came out, there were so many internal changes you almost had to purchase it for new applications to work.

So don't assume everyone will buy panther.\
I just ordered my copy edu discount can't wait!

I've ordered Panther, but I'm not going to install it for at least a few days after the 24th. And, if I hear about problems, I'll wait even longer. Meanwhile, I'm going to run 10.2.8.

I won't install it until the weekend. Im just going to backup components from my Home folder to my iPod. Like documents, music exce-tera. Then erase the HD and install Panther, and other applications. This is the best way to do a major OS update, in my opinion. The chances of having problems is much lower when you install it this way.
