I have a 15" Albook, 1GHz, 768mb ram, 60gb 4200rpm hard drive, airport extreme card in use, couple of apps open, cpu usage on average is 65%, running 10.2.8. The system is in automatic mode, plugged into the AC adaptor and sitting on top of a hard surface. It has been in use for several hours straight.

CPU temperature reads 132.8 degrees F and seems to be getting lower. By the time I finished typing up this post and closed a few extra windows open in safari, it dropped to 129.7°.

I moved it to a spot on the desk slightly ahead (lacking the concentrated heat and it's down to 127). Yesterday I got it down to 118, while still plugged in.

I used to use a podium coolpad with my ibook, but got rid of it because it didn't seem to be making a huge difference. Any input you folks have is appreciated.

The app I'm using is called temperature monitor, which you can find on versiontracker.

Mine usually operates at 315K (108 F) while idle/light duty, with 335K (144 F) causing the fan to come on, stabilizing at 325K (125 F) or so when the CPU is working.

I found this Temperature app today:http://www.kezer.net/thermographx.html

I'll try it out when my AlBook is back from repair.

[Edit: more info]

I should have said I've a 1.25GHz, 1G ram, 4200 HD, APE card running.

My 12" runs generally between 40-50 Celsius depending on desk surface and whether or not there is a spacer to let air flow under the unit.

Running DVDBackup, temperature jumps up to 60 Celsius and stays up there with the fan running.

Charging from an empty battery also tends to keep things hot.

wow.. mine's running a bit hot.

The fan runs in the fast mode during Photoshop... and the CPU temperature climbs from the baseline idling temperature of 124 F all the way up to 154 F.

The Powerbook is a 12inch G4 1GHz/256K/40/combo. I have it set on Automatic and running with the AC adapter, so the processor is set for highest performance.

I will go get an additional 512 K of memory today and check it to see if that helps.

The threshold for the fan to start running in my 12 inch rev B appears to be about 127 degrees F.

What temperature are your fans coming on at?

How about the 867 MHz 12 inch machines? What temp do the fans come on those?

Don't ya love this kind of thing?

My 17-inch has run as hot as 130°F or better just simply plugged in and doing light work like web surfing or iTunes Radio listening. Slowly over the course of about an hour of use, the case absorbs the heat and it becomes too uncomfortable for me to use. I can't imagine what it would be under a render or some Photoshopping. I know I've discussed this in another thread, but I'm almost to the point of returning the thing because it's too bothersome and waiting on Apple laptops until they can use a cooler chip.

My 17" is always on 24/7, the temp on this thing runs at around 130 F. about 130 F to 135 F or so. So, I'm guessing 130 F is about the average temp this thing runs at.

Dave and Ming,

What revision and what configuration are your 17" Powerbooks?

Comparing this 17"1.33 Sept 2003 edition with 512mb ram (at the moment) to your figures (Using ThermographX)

CPU/INTREPID 116 degrees F

CPU Bottomside 116 degrees F

PWR SUPPLY BOTTOMSIDE 111 degrees F

BATTERY 91 degrees F

This after 1 hour untethered (off power adapter/on battery with energy saver on automatic)

Nothing power intensive running.

I'm using a Rev. B 1.33 GHz 17-inch with 1 GB of RAM.

I just started using my 17-inch as I type this so, it's been off all day, and it's now cool to the touch. I wish it would stay cool or at least room temp. My god, it becomes so uncomfortable to use I'm considering returning it and getting a G5.

I should note that I had the 1.25 model which got extremely hot, but turned out to be defective and I didn't want to get another 15-inch after reading about all the issues with them. I don't have an issue with the quality of the 17-inch other than it's too hot to use after a while. I'm really really bummed.

I've left Temperature Monitor running and let it sleep for a couple hours - reports -1 for a little while, then about 80 F, and climbs to 90 over a minute and stays there with zero load, plenty of ventilation, on a wooden desk. Running F@H and burning CDs and surfing the Net for an hour reports 145-150 F.

Running the temp graphic program, I got a high temperature reading of 140°F. I'm pretty frustrated with the heat. I feel like I'm typing on a light bulb. Other than that, I love it! So this is a really big minus for me. I right on the verge of returning it.

wow - what a wide range. I've got a Rev A 17" and am using Temperature Monitor by Marcel Bresink Software-Systeme and find that I usually range from 108-111 F when simply surfing the net, doing email, etc. The hottest I have seen this machine is 118 and that's when I was doing a lot of Photoshop stuff.

What is really interesting is that the 17" machine is my "bed computer" - 80% of the time it is used is at the end of the day when I lounging in bed with it on the end of the bed while I watch tv. I do have a mount that I use to keep the PB off the blankets, etc. (it's really just a rectangular piece of wood with a glass surface (think coke mirror) that just so happens to match the dimensions of the PB).

Go figure.

Go Cubs. The Marlins have four outs left to prove their stuff - it asin't gonna happen. heh heh heh
