On my 867 12", if you touch the screen frame anywhere the top left part of the screen 'ripples' slightly, but only in this area, nowhere else. Is this normal?

Errr... I know that it's just weird that only one part of the screen reacts and the rest doesn't change.

all lcd screens will ripple if you bend the screen.. i dont know if just touching it should make it do that, but i guess if the screen is super thin, then it might more easily ripple when touched

Not bending just the lightest touch will do it.

Mine doesn't ripple - I pressed it as hard as I dared. (I know my Pismo would ripple with the same pressure.)

Mine used to do that in the lower left, but it doesn't anymore.

I had the exact same problem.

12"PB, upper left corner.

It's a manufacturing defect - probably the frame exerting pressure on the screen at that point.

Call Apple - I was offered a replacement *immediately*.

I was dreading someone saying that. Mine was a refurb though so I don't know whether I get the same rights to replacement.

You do. One year warranty is one year warranty.

OK I've emailed them and will wait for a reply next week. I just hope they can offer a quick turnaround. My worry is that the problem might get worse after a while. I looked on Google and found others complaining of the same thing and their screens were replaced. I hope I get lucky and get one with no dead pixels (I have 1 stuck one at the moment).

I called apple care and was told to bring it to an apple store, but the CSR said he had never heard of the problem. I brought it to an apple store and the "genius" simply looked on the apple care database which had no "problem" and sent me on my way. But I also do have the ripple on my upper left hand spot. Maybe I should call again.

I'll let you know what happens. To be honest it hasn't concerned me up til now as I just assumed they did that. Even the 2 funny pixels didn't bother because a) I know that it's common, and b) that because I got this thing for only £840 instead of £1300 I'll forgive them almost anything! If it's not going to get worse then I may not bother to get it sorted. But then knowing my luck 1 day after the 12 months warranty runs out the screen will die...

FWIW, the Apple Store Germany seemed to be familiar with the problem back in March, when I got mine, and it was mentioned by a number of people on this forum. Do a search if you like.

And yes, warranty is warranty.

Get the ****er replaced or fixed. Don't let any sales lackey convince you otherwise.

Edited to add: And get AppleCare! 3 years of care is worth it for laptops. Really.

Don't touch it there then.

Unfortunately, that means not touching it at all.

It's beautiful to look at, but that's not what most people buy it for!

Well I've emailed Apple twice and had no reply. And I've just tried adding a thread to the Apple support forum and that just times out. Not impressed at the moment.

E-mailing or posting on Apple's forums aren't going to get you anywhere. Applecare is handled through the phone and their forums don't have Apple reps responding to anything...

I have the same exact thing going on with my 12 inch powerbook I got 3 weeks ago. It was also a referb that i got for like $400 less. Great deal!

But yeah when ever i type the top left of the screen will ripple, its not a huge deal but I too was wondering if I should do something about it. I hate the hassell of being with out it for like a week while they fix it, its almost worth just dealing with it!

NOT E-MAIL.

E.T. PHONE HOME.

I honestly don't know if I got preferential treatment (somebody once mentioned on the phone that there were a number of products registered in my name - I guess, after fifteen years!), but the phone support people here in Europe (all based out of Cork, Ireland AFAIK) have been very helpful.

Except when I wanted new feet for my 12" PB. But that wasn't a manufacturing defect, I guess.

Finally got round to phoning Apple and they were super helpful. It's being collected on Monday and will take 5-7 days for repair. Seemed daft not to get it done whilst under warranty.
