But for my new 3 day old 12" powerbook, the fan turns on after 10 min. of use. and I am only surfing the net, not even listening to music. I have airport turned on and bluetooth off. screen brightness is about 2/3, with automatic setting. and the hand rest area is just little warm.

I hope this is not indicating that my powerbook doesn't dissipate heat efficiently enough and it may cause further troubles.

btw this is my very first laptop, and my very first mac

Any feedback is appreciated.

Start "top" in a terminal and see what's eating your CPU cycles. My fans never turn on (PB 17") unless I do CPU intence work such as ripping a CD or so.

The 12" is rumored to be a little more hot-natured than the other PowerBooks... but still, it shouldn't come on that quickly. It is likely, as the previous poster suggested, that something is eating up CPU cycles. You keep lots of Microsoft stuff open? Entourage, although a wonderful program, is terrible about taking out huge chunks of CPU when it should be idle.

Top is nice but I would recomend for every day use (if you have the dock shown) CPU Monitor (its in your utilities folder ).

Set it up so you can see the CPU monitor as the dock icon. Looks way cool .

The major thing the runs my cpu is when I try and sign on to MSN (3.5.1). It almost maxes it out. Its crazy stuff.

MSN *really* sucks. I wouldn't worry about this though. As long as the fan doesn't bother you, (too noisy) you should be fine.

Yes its accurate.
It does that on my machine also.
It makes it look as pretty as it can (or that is at least what i think after a long night/morning partying).

If you scroll down say using the arrow keys, instead of clicking on the bar and draggin it it uses less CPU ummm power...

I've had my 12" PB for a couple days now and the fan has come on briefly, after a couple hours use, and my room is about 80+ degrees. The metal's gotten pretty hot. If yours is coming on so quickly I suspect it is something like MSN, as someone suggested.

LOL well if your room is hot just browing the net is going to get that fan going.

Down under my mom (or mum if you like) was using her Pismo to do some accounting work. It was about 40 degrees cellsius around mid day (Some houses in australia have air-con, almost none have insulation or central air (in QLD)).

Her Laptop fan kicked into like the higher setting. And she just decided to turn it off. The fan was not turning off. So like the rest of the aussies we decided to go see a movie (horray for air-con).

-----
Side note time:
We moved into a new house that has insulation in the walls, roof, and central air.

Where is your laptop set on. If its on a table it should vent well. If its on a bed or a blanket the fan will come on once in awhile.
