I just recently bought one of those 15" 1.25GHZ powerbooks and am pretty excited. Anyway a few questions:

Reading around I've gotten pretty spooked about ordering online at the apple store. I've read about those latch issues and dead pixels. Are these problems typical and is it harder to resolve because I ordered online?
If there's problems with it can I take it to any mac dealer and recieve repairs or will I always have to deal wit hteh online store.

Thanks for any help.

BTW: I keep reading about this new panther build. Since I ordered my powerbook today will it be shipping with this or am I left out in the cold?

EDIT: K forget teh last question just noticed I have to pay 29.99 for it.

Congratulations on your purchase!

Dead pixels are a problem inherent to LCD manufacture. Every single LCD sold by every single brand is prone to having some pixels fail at some point. The only difference is in exchange policy. I believe Apple draws the line at five pixels, or two to three if smack in the middle of your screen.

FWIW, I ordered online here in Germany and had a different problem with the LCD on my first 'book - the screen "ripple" covered in another thread recently. Called them and was offered a replacement immediately, plus they arranged for my first machine to be picked up *after* the second was delivered, so I could continue working and still have time to transfer my data to the new box.

Note, however, that these problems do occur, but they are very rare on the grand scale of shipments. They're blown out of proportion here because this is a troubleshooting forum.

Do not worry, and Welcome to Macintosh.

Thanks for the help

I'm a graphic design student and have been using macs at school for a couple years now and have loved them. I finally decided to make the jump now that I had a bit of cash. I figured the powerbook was my best bet because it's portable and I can lug it to school.

Thanks again.

I received my 15" Al PB a week ago. It had no latch problems, no white spots, etc. It was great. Unfortunately, I found a problem with airport. After checking at the Apple store it seems that the cable to the antenna is pinched. It works but the sensitivity is very, very low. It has been sent in and will be returned soon.

I think you shouldn't worry about ordering this PB. There are a few problems with some machines, but they are all easy to fix and Apple is taking care of them quickly.

The new PB seems to not have any major problems that cannot be solved. The early Ti PB had poor airport sensitivity, loose batteries that could fall out and paint that was easily chipped.
Happy owner of a new 15" Al PB.

Yah, welcome to the Mac world. I'm new too, and everyone here on these forums are a ton of help. As for the pixels and whitespots, i got mine just recently and I haven't seen any problems at all and I love it. Takes a little bit to get used to if you're used to the PC but its great! I don't know if this is any help, but if you have an apple store in you area, they have a place in the store called the apple bar. I bought mine from the store, and they ran a pixel check for me right there, and also they have a resident tech or "mac genius" that will help answer any technical questions you may have. If you don't have a store close by, like I said, people here are pretty knowledgeable and really helpful. Mac users really stick up for each other and its awesome! Once again, welcome!
