The laptop wil be used for web browsing, e-mail, Office Apps, burning and ripping CDs, etc. "Snappiness" and multitasking is important, there will probably be 4-5 programs open at the same time. These are my two choices:

1.25GHz PowerPC G4
512MB DDR333 SDRAM - 2x256 SO-DIMMs
$2051

1GHz PowerPC G4
768MB DDR333 SDRAM - 2 SO-DIMM
$2095.99

Would it be better to have the extra RAM or extra CPU speed? I want the computer to have a healthy 4+ year product life cycle. I'm goign to buy the extra 512MB RAM for the 1GHz system from Crucial.

Others may disagree with me, but I've found the sweet spot for RAM on OS X to be about 512MB. I would say that adding RAM up to 512 results in a vast improvement for most things, while adding above that helps, it isn't as much.

I'd go with the 1.25 w/ 512 - you can always add ram later, you won't be able to get the extra speed later.

I would go for the 1.25 GHz G4. 512 Mb should be enough for your needs. You can always add RAM latter. You cannot upgrade the CPU.

I have a new 17 inch with only 512 RAM and the performance is amazing with so little memory.

I'd go for the highest CPU speed and add more RAM when it becomes cheaper. The higher the CPU the longer your powerbook will be useful.

Though I have to say I am disgusted by the ever increasing demands of software and system. A 1GHZ chip should be plenty fast enough but sadly it will not be in two short years.....

With less RAM..
You'll have to put up with the fan coming on more often than not.

But I am impressed how little RAM is needed for quite intense work.

As far as the pricing, the system does not have a SuperDrive and the smallest HDD posible. Combining those options and the educational discount, it makes a 1.25GHz CPU possible under $2100.

Thanks for the suggestions though, looks like the 1.25GHz system will be the choice.
