My brother has just got his new 1,33GHz G4 PowerBook 17". It sure is a beauty!

Yesterday I noticed that the SuperDrive is really slow, reading CD-R discs. I have tried with VERBATIM and MMORE CDs, but it reads them both very slow (512kB takes 3-4 secs to copy). About 10 mintues to copy 70MB from a CD and over to the PowerBook. The SuperDrive also had some problems playing a DVD movie yesterday too. What is happening?

I just tried to import a music CD with iTunes, and that worked as normal (good speed). It also has no problems reading the Software CD that came with the PowerBook, or other professional made CDs.

Is it the CDs, or is it the SuperDrive? What could the problem be?

I have heard something about other having problems with SuperDrive reading CD-R discs, but I have found no answer to this problem.

Could this firmware patch fix the problem?

The firmware patch is actually to old for the SuperDrive in the 1,33GHz 17" PB. The patch is for UJ-815, and not UJ-816 which is in the new PB.

Some help would really be appreciated!

Could the problem be 10.2.8? The 1,33GHz G4 17" PowerBook was shipped with 10.2.7.

I suggest you try looking up Apple's Knowledge base and see what you could find there.

This is the first time I have heard of any problems like this, sorry I can't be of help.

(I have heard of slow burning, but that is usually because of bad media.)

If the SuperDrive is broken in some kind of way, will Apple give my brother a new SuperDrive, or a new PowerBook?
