I've seen this happen a couple times now and it's pissing me off. My iBook (dual USB, 600MHz) just goes to sleep on its own. Today it happened with well over an hour of juice left (according to the power meter) while I was editing a document in AppleWorks. AirPort was turned off. It just went to sleep, and would not wake up. The little while light just throbbed away.

So, I went home and decided to try plugging it into the power adapter. I had the iBook closed when I did it, and when I opened it up, it woke up from sleep like nothing was wrong.

Anyone else seen this? I searched the forum, but didn't find anything quite like this.

Here's another tidbit. I had the iBook running on the adapter for maybe 30 minutes, then I unplugged it to go mobile again. The battery indicator said I had less than 30 minutes left!

So, one of two things is going on.

(a) the battery is dead and acting flaky
(b) the iBook is wrong about the charge

My guess is that the iBook suddenly decided that it didn't have enough juice left and forced itself to sleep, but somewhere it jumped from a good 50% charge down to near zero.

I've done some more forum reading, and I saw some people complaining that 10.2.8 screwed up their battery readings or something (the jury seemed to be out on exactly what was happening).

The other time this happened, I was on 10.2.7, though, so I'm not sure that's it.

I'd agree with this. I've got a similar iBook - Late 2001, and the same thing happened to me, same symptoms, and it was indeed the battery. I used X-Charge to see what was happening; the battery would suddenly die after discharging mormally for only a few minutes.

New battery, et voila - back to normal.

I may give that a shot... but am I right in reading that a new iBook battery costs $130??
