Ok, now that OS X 10.3 is on its way, let's hear from the beta and gold master testers on what's in store for the rest of us.

I was planning on doing a fresh install, but a recent posting on MacIntouch says that the 10.3 disc does not install Classic. I have a couple apps that require Classic, so this is a requirement. I'd rather start from scratch, so how do we get Classic with our new OS?

Are there any other issues we should be aware of? Of highest importance, what areas do we need to wait for the 10.3.1 update?

Tell us, we want to know!

Since the default 10.3 install includes the Classic system prefs pane, I imagine that there will be an OS 9 disc included in the retail box. Of course, you could always use the restore disc included with your computer to install classic off of. Or, you could move the OS 9 System Folder to an iPod or other external disc and put it back when you've clean installed 10.3.

No Classic? Thank Jesus.

I was so annoyed when I booted my new 15" for the first time and saw OS 9 on it.

Exactly.

I can't remember the last time I actually used Classic.

I have two major but highly specific scientific programs that require Classic. Alas, their support is long gone and porting them to OS X is going to be non-trivial. I don't use them every day, but when I do, there is no substitute available.

For some of us, Classic really helps us as we move to the 21st Century OS. I am grateful to Apple for offering a solution that is so much better than Virtual PC.

Mac OS 9 is not bundled with Mac OS X 10.3.

But, you can do an "Archive and install" installation of Panther. I did, and everything was OK, I only needed to reinstall Palm Desktop and Stuffit Deluxe.

Did a clean install of Panther on my Powerbook, then stuck in the Software Restore DVD. I worked fine to load iDVD, Classic, and the other apps they include. I didn't install the developer tools off the DVD though, since they were the Jaguar version.

Also, Jaguar didn't ship with OS 9 in the box either. 10.1 was the last one to do so.

What's the best choice for a fairly new AluBook? Should I upgrade or start fresh and install everything again...
