I guess laptops have a life cycle much like any other creature. I am beginning to notice the signs of aging in my ol' friend. My once youthful, spunky comp seems to be on the brink of full fledged old codger syndrome. Perhaps its performance decrease is just relative. Although I have bumped its memory several times, It seems slower now than ever before, but this is probably because I have been working on some newer systems lately... A PB12 and AL15... And going back on my 500Ti feels like wading through syrup. Anyway.... That aside, some definite CHANGES I have noticed are that 1) My battery dies in under an hour, even with a full charge. My best bet is just to plug in everywhere, which can be a pain if Im in a lecture and can't be near an outlet. I should probably buy a new battery, but at 130 bucks, I don't really feel like dropping that much dough right now. 2) and most upsetting to me, is how LOUD my book is now! It was never this loud. Even at 'idle' it emits a sharp hum, and when the fan kicks in it is deafening! I wont take it to class anymore because it is so damn loud, and I always like my macs to be a point of interest for onlookers because of its style and grace, not because it sounds like a hovercraft is coming carreining through the wall.

Has anybody else noticed these age spots on your senior Macs? Have you found any solutions? Is their any OS haxies that can let me control the fans operation? Any response is appreciated!

(I would buy a new 15Al, but I figure I can wear earplugs for the next year or so until that monster G5 is tamed and caged in a 1" book.)

(Perpetuating detached, existentialist ennui since 2001)

as for it being loud, i suggest you remove the back as specified in the manual under the hdd replacem, ent, as well as the keyboard. Have a look around the fans.. i don't know if you have a dog, but i do.. and dog hair can get anywhere.. there may be something obstructing the cooling for some reason.

secondary to that.. how long since a clean install, os x or 9? run any utils lately, letting the cron jobs execute?

the ti 500 is getting slightly long in the tooth.. i have a ghz model and i love it.... not that i am not jealous of those with an alubook.. albeit on ly the ones with a perfect alubook.

anywho, here are just some ideas.

nayr x: I have the Ti 667Mhz for 12 months now and experience similar things you have described. Although I don't feel that it is slower, the fan has definitely come on more and more frequently. For the first couple of months it was fine, but now it comes on constantly. I can have nothing on except for surfing the web and the fan would STILL come on. And like you said, it seems to be getting louder and louder. *Funny because the FAN just came on as I'm typing this!*

I'm actually thinking of going with the iBook which is rumored to come out later this year or early next year. (see my post here). One iBook owner, SupahCoolX told me that he has had his iBook for 2 years and the doesn't remember the fan ever coming on!

The fan on my Ti867 come on all the time too, even with just surfing and some Word Processing...

Not an issue yet, but it can get annoying.

Quite happy with the machine yet, it will easily last me a good few years until the G5 PB Rev B hits the stores

Peace,

Marc
