Hi I just ordered a PB 12' and am waiting for it to arrive. Meanwhile perhaps somebody could answer this cuestion.

I think to have read somewhere that you can have the PB on with the screen closed. Is that possible?.

As I will have to carry it arround a bit I was thinking of using it as "Super iPod" while carrying it.

Thanks!

I've heard people talk about closed lid mode which allows you to connect to a desktop keyboard/mouse/monitor and still use the PB while it's closed. I'm sure you could do this with iTunes running while traveling. I haven't tried it myself so I can't speak from experience. Do a search for closed lid mode.

Personally, I think there is the potential of really messing up your HD doing this. These types of HDs are not made to be operating when the machine is moving. You should always sleep your PB before carrying it around.

The mode is called 'clamshell' mode. It allows you to use your powerbook closed when hooked up to an external screen, mouse and monitor.

What you want to do I don't think is possible. When you close the powerbook lid, the machine goes into sleep mode. So you have to have some way to wake it up. Normally this would be done by the external keyboard, but if you have nothing attatched to the notebook, there would be no way to wake it up.

Sorry

OT, but who decided to call it clamshell mode? Any idea? 'cos I've heard people using that term quite a bit recently, but I'm positive it never used to be called that...

I believe this was once a possibility but they removed it because of overheating. The lid being closed keeps too much heat trapped in.

I do remember somebody posting a picture here of their setup on their desktop. It was a Apple Display with a wireless keyboard and mouse on the desk but with a 12"PB under the desk on the desk drawer with the LID CLOSED.

It seems you can but you need the external keyboard and mouse + screen.

My 1GHz TiBook works fine as a desktop (lid closed) when connected to an external monitor & keyboard/mouse. Fans come on more frequently when the lid is closed, but oh well. Doing this for almost a full year with no detrimental effects.

http://www.binaervarianz.de/projekte...ieren/meltmac/ has a tutorial for patching your kernel to allow you to shut off clamshell mode so that your PB will not sleep when you close the lid. You need to install a copy of Apple Dev Tools for OS X.

This will work if you use a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard. I've seen someone who has his 12inch closed, and since you can wake with Bluetooth now when you move the mouse, it will wake the Powerbook as well, even with the lid closed. haven't tested this out myself yet, since I don't use a bluetooth mouse or keyboard, but if you do, give this a try and see what happenes.
