I have a Rev B 12 inch and the fan runs quite a bit. I have set the processer to "reduced" and have also added an addtional 512 of memory. It' a little better with the additional memory but the fan still come on a fair amount during web surfing.

I am wondering if Apple tried to make these machines cooler by decreasing the threshold for activation of the fans.

Do the fans come on with the REV A 887 MHz 12 inch powerbooks while web surfing? What does it take to activate your fans on these machines?

Get 'Temperature Monitor' and tell us ~ when the fans turn on.

My Rev A turns on @ ~ 60 C.
- What programs are you running when the fans turn on?
- Is your laptop on your lap/desk/pellow?

Hi Global. I downloaded both Temperature Monitor and also Thermograph X. It appears that Temperature monitor displays information from the sensor on the top of the CPU, whereas Thermograph X monitors from the top of the CPU, HDD bottom, CPU of DIE, and Battery.

Checking with Temperature Monitor, I find that the results are somewhat variable, with the fan being triggered anywhere from around 60 to 65. The sensor that is consistent for triggering the fan is the CPU on DIE. That one starts the fan at 60 and the fan shuts off at 55 on the cooldown phase.

The fan gets activated when I am using Safari and surfing around on the web, without other programs being open.

I have the computer on a hard surface (wood) desk with good ventilation. Room temperature is about 23 C.

What temperature do you get on your Rev A 12 under similar conditions?

I think its a good thing that the fan turns on @ about 60 celcius.

I can only tell you my experiance from the rev a.

Mine sometimes gets hot when it is charging the battery. If you computer is fully charged unplug the power cord. That could help a bit.

The fan on my PowerBook only really turns on if i'm really pusshing the cpu. Like chatting online and surfing the web doesn't really turn it on.

My computer has been running for 4 hours now, and it has been pluged in the whole time and its only 50 celcius.

But i do find it strange that it turns the fan on when its running in reduced. Maybe some Rev B owners could give there opnions.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the computer. You could always run CPU monitor to see if CPU is getting maxed out by anything.
