An update...

Had the spots on my replaced screen after 5 days, put up pictures at http://homepage.mac.com/alwi/PhotoAlbum10.html (and to date have had more than 13,000 hits!) on Teusday. Alerted my local AppleCare guys about the problem on Teusday.

Called today to bring in my PowerBook for another screen replacement. This time I stayed to watch the process. Not something you'd want to try yourself. Lots of dissassembly required. Entire top half of the clamshell was replaced. Entire process took less than an hour.

Now I have another perfect screen. Hope it lasts! In any case, I'm glad I have the extended warranty.

Great to hear you got a flawless screen...you should count yourself lucky that they covered that for free twice, a lot of people have just heard "deal with it".

Why should we have to "just deal with it"?

A large part of Apple's strength over the Windows-Intel masses has been with the elegance and aesthetics of the hardware as compared to the Windows-Intel world.

A defect in the screen may have nothing to do with how well the machine acutally works but it irritates me to no end.

If I didn't care how the machine looks and only wanted to get my work done, I'd have bought a Dell.

Does anyone else not find that strange? He had his screen replaced, it looks like the spots came back in the exact same spots. Or am I reading this wrong.....

Maybe they didn't replace it at all or all the screens have a similar defect?

Is it me or do the spots look exactly the same?

I was thinking the same thing. That's not a flawless screen. I can see the white spots in the picture.

My white spots are in the same place, also. I'm gonna refrain from taking it in until they are able to nail the problem down (and also because I won't be able to part with it until the semester ends).

I believe what the user is saying is that he got the clamshell replacement, and is not having any problems on the 2nd repair attempt (which is not viewable on his site, because he hasn't uploaded pics yet).

Let me clarify...

I have NOT uploaded new pics of the replaced screen. The pics are of the screen BEFORE replacement. There does not seem any point to putting up new photos as the spots are gone but I am sure... they will be back.

I watched the entire process of screen replacement. It was definately replaced. And the tech and I checked the screen together. No spots, no problems.

However if I press the back of the display, there is "pooling" at the sites where the spots used to be. In addition, spot 2 is now lighter that the rest of the screen. Nowhere near as obvious as before though.

I just got mine back (see new thread). I can see the pressure points by flexing the screen, but they are barely apparent --- before I returned the machine, they were very obvious. It seems that there was either something back there, or the LCD itself had a defect/weak point (for example, like someone, somewhere pointed out, maybe manufacturing-process suction cups damaged the screens).

I'm leery, but hopeful that this is a "real" fix. By chance do you know what brand of LCD your repair place put in? Mine is a Samsung, which is a quality part.

I've got spots too but I've decided to wait a bit until this gets resolved. If Apple has a bad batch of screens, I want them to throw them away before I send my PB in for a fix. Fat chance, right!?
Anyway, these have GOT to be pressure points from manufacturing the screen and attaching it to the top shell. Do the test yourself. Push on the back anywhere near a white spot. You get ripples that radiate out from the spot, not where you push. There's got to be some sort of glue (for lack of a better word) attaching the case to the screen right over the spot. This is NOT NORMAL!!!
Come on Apple! Admit it. You bought a defective batch of screens and now you've got a problem on your hands.
FIX IT!!!
