Here's what I need to backup:

- Music folder with iTunes library, 9.33 GB data (AAC)
- Document folder, about 660 MB data
- Movie folder, about 4 GB data
- Picture folder (small data)
- some applications (small data)
- data from Mail.app and Adress Book.app

Here's what I can use to backup:

- my SuperDrive with CD-Rs or DVD-Rs
- my girlfriend's iBook (13 GB free HD space)
- NO external FW drive

- Mac OS X 10.2.8
- Toast Titanium
- Carbon Copy Cloner

What's the best/easiest/most reliable/fastest way to backup?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Since it's all just personal documents there should be no issues with permissions. It is quite a big amount of data, so I'd forget CD-R or DVD-R if possible.

Take the iBook. 13GB may not be quite enough, but it's already close. Use either

- FireWire cable and the iBook in Target Disk Mode (faster, but requires reboot))

or

- Ethernet cable and FileSharing (slower, requires no reboot)

Once connected, copy as much of your stuff to your g/f's iBook as you can. If you get tight on space use CD-R (or DVD-R) for the rest.

This will work. But it's a pain to use on a regular basis. If you want a regular backup (and you really should want that) you should buy an external FW disk (120GB LaCie for CHF350 at mac.letec.ch right now) and use CCC.

Good luck.

Thanks for your advice, Simon.

Actually, there are two promos on mac.letec.ch:

- d2 200 GB: CHF 399 (instead of 479)
- d2 120 GB: CHF 299 (instead of 349)

My regular backups fit on a CD-R, as I have all the AAC files on CDs at my home and movies on DVD. In a way, my PowerBook is a backup of those...

Ah, that's new. Thanks for the info, Tritonus.

I might get that 200GB right away, after all, you never know when you need more space...

Juhui, bin ab sofort "Elite Member".

Did you try archiving iTunes library to DVD-R with iTunes 4.1? See my post in the "Software" section of MacNN.

Lacie d2 is tempting, indeed... But with a new 17" PB and Mac OS X 10.3, 2003 has been an expensive year...

I have the RevA PB17... so i got hit $300 harder than those with the RevB. But I'm grabbing Panther @ the EDU rate. I gotta pick between teh 120GB and 160gb lacie d2. I'm probably gonna grab the 160gb for $209 on Apple Educational Store.

By this year's end, I'll have put probably $4000+ into Apple's hands... and that's $4000 I can't really afford... oh well. Stimulating the economy for my boys and girls in Washington...

OT: Mine is a Rev. A PB 17" as well. And I also grab the Panther at EDU rate, but I go for the family pack at about $99 in Switzerland.

Any ideas on my original question?

Do you have a .mac account? You can use the Backup application to backup and restore your data. I use it to backup just about everything (email, documents folder, iTunes purchased music, address book, ect.).

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

No, I don't have a .mac account (yet). But your screenshot does indeed look promising, thanks.

How important/beneficial is it to a clean install of Panther? Why are you doing it? Is it advised to clean-install Panther? Is this urban legend or the absolute way to go?
