I was interested in the new 15" PB. I've been considering a Mac for awhile (I'm a long time PC user) -- though the reviews posted here were not encouraging. Not convinced, I went to Microcenter to check it out myself. The display unit had been out for a few weeks and it was perfect -- no white spots, keyboard was fine, it was cool the touch, etc. I couldn't resist. I bought it. Mine seems fine so far, no flexing keyboard and no white spots! Its a beautiful machine!

Here's to hoping!

I've repeated it many times here, while trying to find cool new applications for the new powerbooks (Bluetooth comes to mind). Sometimes I hear rants, as you originally mentioned, made completely out of context--this is a troubleshooting forum, and that's what the posts' comments reflect. To use this as some sort of 'evidence' that the PowerBook is faulty is operating on misinformation. It's foolish.

BTW, my PowerBook is perfect.

Yeah, no probs whatsoever. I love mine and I do know what it's like to have a apple laptop, I had the iBook before. Simply put, I loved that one and I love this one even more.

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

First post from the new machine. Wow - amazing. In no time flat I was up and running. Cant say that about the Vaio this is replacing. No keyboard flex, no *heat* at all, no white spots... maybe its because this is a newer build I dunno (Microcenter just got it in) -- but I am happy so far. The harddrive is amazingly quiet. And this screen is fab (way better than the 12" PB).

I'd say only issue is the text smoothing -- will take some getting used to. The PB itself is great! I'm glad I blew off the negative comments.

Funny - I may be the first person sucked in by the Windows iTunes. I've always been a Mac Voyeur -- and in messing around with iTunes for Windows last night I decided to go for the real thing.

Welcome to the Mac world!

You can play with how Mac OS X generates text by going into the Apple Menu and choosing System Preferences and then selecting General. I think you have to log out or restart for it to work though, but I'm not positive.

Congratulations! I'm still a little torn between getting that vs. the 17". And wait until you have Panther--it will be like a new machine all over again.

(And do change the Font Smoothing to "Best for Flat Panel" and then log out and back in. I also recommend calibrating the display with SuperCal at versiontracker.com.)

Yep, as TheIceMan said, congrats on the PB and welcome to MacNN!!

Any questions or queries you may have, no matter how stupid they may sound, just post them here and we all always do our best to help people out...

Also, as for the defects and negative press the machines have got, hmm, it is a difficult situation as this is a kind of trouble shooting board... if there are any issues at all, they will turn up being posted about here. It seems that the first batch of the 15" Alu's has had more problems than most new PBs, however I always suspect that it is the users who have problems that are the most vocal, and that for every problem machine mentioned here, there are thousands of perfect machines out there... it is hard to see a proper representation from just looking at these boards.

Enjoy the Powerbook, and also congrats on the timing, buying so you get the free copy of Panther! *Jealous*

Peace,

Marc
