My Powerbook should be here on Friday, so I'm getting nervous (will there be white spots?) and excited (how cool will this be?), but one question in the meantime...

Does the Powerbook come with a MacOS 9 install CD? I have a couple of elderly apps that run under 9 and I really need it. My iBook definitely came with 9 and X, but since then Apple have officially switched everything to X.

If there's no disk, do I have to go and spend more money to get 9?

Thanks.

Mike.

9.2.2 was installed on mine ... FrameMaker 6 works fine for me, 'though I did have to go through Adobe's hoops to save as pdf.

If I had to guess I would say that the new Powerbooks will NOT be able to boot into OS 9...I could be wrong but as newer hardware comes out OS 9 support is dwindling, and I don't think the Rev A 12" and 17" could boot 9.

There will still be a classic environment though, so your os 9 apps would run under classic.

I would guess that you will only get the OSX disks, as the OS 9 install disks probably wouldn't install on the new 15" Al book anyway.

...if I am wrong, someone please correct me!

Yep, System Preferences, Startup Disk, no System 9. Is there a way to fake it?

OS 9 will not run on any Aluminum Powerbook. Your only choices are to either use Classic mode (and yes, the Powerbooks come with the needed OS 9 System folder for Classic), or run Linux, and Mac On Linux.

And also, all Aluminum Powerbooks have shipped with a single DVD that contains the Mac OS X installer, software restore that is run once the OS is up for Classic, QuickBooks, etc. It also contains the Apple Hardware Test, bootable by holding the option key on bootup.

New Macs booting into OS 9? Welcome to 2002.

They don't boot OS 9, and they never will. They don't include an OS 9 CD -- if you delete Classic, you can reinstall it from the OS X DVD that's included.

For Classic purposes, yes.
