As a true early adopter, I was first in line back in '95 to get what was the first PPC PowerBook, the 5300cs (no cash then for the 5300c!). Without going into its lackluster performance, I'd like some ideas as to what to do with it. I've recently undug it from the depths of a closet (after about 5 years of sleep), and booted it up with no problems.

Now, the question is, can I put it to good use? There's no Linux that I can load into it (I think not), but I'm SURE there's something redeeming it could do in a home network environment.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Mark

How about:
- print server (need serial to USB adapter)
- file server (wouldn't store a lot without external SCSI drives)
- web server
- e-mail server (w/ Appleshare IP)
- e-donkey, napster, carracho, etc. server/client (same problems with storage though)

or you could just put 7.6.1 and some old apps on it and reminisce about the 'classic' days.

Cheers,

I like to keep an old, outdated laptop around to play with other OS's. YellowDog Linux is the one I keep coming back to and it really is good on older hardware that's no longer up to running modern programs.

It's always nice to have some alternate knowledge to fall back on, apart from Windows. Plus you can start to understand what the Linux geeks are talking about. Sort of a self-teaching tool.

I hacked my old PB1400 and made it into a digital picture frame.

Picture frame.... I like that!

Yellow Dog does not work on that generation of PBs, unfortunately. That'd have been my 1st choice.

Thanks to all.
