Alright, it's not rust because the outer skin of an aluminum object is already aluminum oxide flush to the aluminum.
All I know is that my palms, sweating from the heat of the laptop, leave substantial white patterns that don't wipe off easily.
I know it's not skin oil - I wash my hands often.
I'd put something on the palmrest excpet I rememberr a warning not to put anything between the screen and the main unit - it might make the computer cycle between sleep and waking, draining the battery absolutely (and maybe making a fire hazard if it's flammable stuff stuffed in betweem the layers.) Has anyone else experienced tthis discoloration of the palmests on the new aliuminum powerbooks?

Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

Check these out

I have used them on my Ti Powerbooks and my Al Powerbooks. They keep the metal from pitting over time from skin oils and sweat

Try this...

I use one of these on my 12"PB. It's fantastic. Protects the whole wrist rest area. Adds a great deal of comfort as well while typing. They're not available in the US. But, I have ordered from this place in the past with great service and fast shipping.

Yeah, it's just sweat/salt from your hands drying on the surface of the palmrest. I use the "wrist rugs" that some other people linked to on my 12" and they work pretty well.
