I've owned a 700mhz/Combo drive/16mb video iBook for about 6 months. In general I like the machine but am considering upgrading to something a bit faster (900mhz/32mb video or 12" 1ghz Powerbook). The two main speed bottlenecks for me are Safari and VPC5 (WinXP). I've been using a little test to compare computers by bringing up the following site (ebay Canada Apple) in Safari:

http://listings.ebay.ca/pool2/plisti...x.html?from=R0

and then scrolling from top to bottom by holding the mouse button on the bottom scroll arrow. If anyone owns both a 16mb iBook and a 12" Powerbook and would willing to compare by this test, I'd be very grateful. (or if you also own a 32mb video iBook as well, all the better).

BTW, I have 384mb RAM which should be enough for Safari, I would assume. I have a highspeed cable connection. If I run Internet Explorer in OS9 then the same scroll takes half as long (on my machine, 4secs vs. 2secs). So it seems that my problem with Safari is less the internet connection speed and more how well my iBook works with Safari.

No one out there owns both a 12" PB and a 16mb video iBook and is willing to share their feelings about the relative merits of the two?

I own a 12" 1 GHz Powerbook and a 800 MHz iBook (32mb) but your link doesn't work.

I have your same laptop with the same amount of RAM. I scrolled the page in 6 secs. I will be getting a 12" PB in a few days. Will try again.

Note: While watching my CPU meter I scrolled again. For the 5-6 seconds of scrolling it was at 60%. So I wonder if the graphics card determines the scrolling speed? Or perhaps there is a max scrolling speed in Safari so that you are able to get a glimpse the pages and add useability to this function.

I don't think this is a good test as Safari seems to be artificially limiting the scrolling speed. For instance, it is a lot faster if you use the keyboard down-arrow to scroll the page (I have my repeat rate turned all the way up.)

As far as impressions of the machines go, I can tell you that my 12" PB is considerably faster than my wife's 12" 800MHz iBook. It is fine for her for what she uses it for (email, web browsing, iTunes, etc.) but everything is quite a bit faster on my PB. The new 12" is a pretty dang snappy machine, I think it is even maybe a little bit faster than my 1 GHz 17" Powerbook.

I've got a 12" 1ghz with 768 mb and my computer is noticably faster than my girlfriends 900mhz ibook with 384 mb. now you might say it's because she has less ram, but i would argue otherwise. even with nothing running on either machine, my computer opens programs much faster and is just generally more responsive. and when it comes to altivec app... forget about that ibook. even photoshop elements was dog slow on the ibook.
