I read long ago there is a way to target the harddrive or something like that...

how can I transfer my mp3 music folder from my iMac to PB? (without an iPod or external drive)

thanks

As long as you have an iMac with Firewire ports, this will work.

Connect the two computers together with a Firewire cable. Start one of them up while holding down the "T" key. That computer will start up in Firewire disk mode.

The other computer will mount it as an external hard drive. You can then drag any files you like on the other computer's drive.

A cheap Ethernet cable will do the trick, too. Just turn on Personal File Sharing on one Mac, and connect to it from the other via the Finder. I recommend using the same username on both systems--but if not, you can change the ownership of the files after they are transferred.

To move your music:

1. Copy the music library files themselves (by default, they're in your username/Music folder) to wherever you want them on the new machine, and tell iTunes where that is. I recommend using the same location on the new machine as on the old.

2. Copy your Equalizer creations, if you wish, from username/Library/Preferences (and your other iTunes prefs are in that folder too if you want them)

3. To preserve your playlists, ratings, and playcounts, you'll need to transfer your library database files, too. They are stored in username/Music, and end in .xml.

4. If all else fails and the new iTunes won't show your songs, drop your music folder onto the iTunes window. This forces the database to be re-built.

Oh and another silly Question, I just got my powerbook not long ago I wonder if I clean install 10.3 will I lose some of the free software like iDVD and Graphic Convertor?

if so I may not wish to clean install and do this Mp3 transfer now

I need to do some music shopping on iTunes

Yes you will. Panther may reinstall a new copy of iDVD though. If you use an "Archive and Install" rather than a "Clean" install when you install 10.3 your current apps won't be touched.

I thought a "clean" install wiped the OS... not the whole drive. So extra apps should still be there. Am I wrong? (I know you ALSO have the option to reformat the drive--but I thought a "clean install" was a little less extreme than that.)

What you refer to is an "archive and install." It will preserve all of your applications and user folders. Apple used to refer to this procedure in OS 9 (and earlier) as a "clean install."
