All TiBooks with Gigabit ethernet, my QS (also Gigabit) they all have autosensing NIC's.
ie. you can plug a normal network cable between youe computer and a hub/switch/cable modem/dsl/another computer ... and it will automatically detect what hardware sits at the other end allowing you to go anywhere with just a network cable (no crossover cables anymore).

does the 12in AlBook have this feature ? (even though it's 10/100 only)

Yes it does. I don't think apple make machines without this capability any more.
