Can I mount an old G3 iMac as a firewire drive on my Powerbook?

I remeber reading that it only works with G4s but I might be wrong.

Anyone know?

If it has Firewire it shoud be able to boot into Target Disk Mode by holding down the T key when you turn it on.

Target computers

The following models can be used as target computers:
iMac (Slot Loading) with Firmware version 2.4 or later
iMac (Summer 2000 and all models introduced after 2000.07)
eMac (All models)


Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) with ATA drive
Power Mac G4 Cube
Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet and all models introduced after 2000.07)
Power Mac G5


iBook (FireWire and all iBook models introduced after 2000.09)


PowerBook G3 (FireWire)
PowerBook G4 (All models)

There's an easier way to put it: if it has FireWire and AGP graphics, then it supports Target Disk Mode (and booting from FireWire and USB).*

However, some of the early FireWire/AGP machines may require an update to the latest firmware to do it.
