My only main concern with buying a laptop is dead pixels.

I'm anal and they would bother me.

But I've had 4 apple laptops and no dead pixels, so I have the feeling my luck is about to run out.

Unless, the lcd are getting better with fewer dead pixels.

Is there any reseller that will let you return or exchange an ibook for a dead pixel?

Is compusa easy on exchanges?

macmall?

I assume the apple store doesn't do it unless it has what 7 or more dead pixels?

Thought the same thing, until I asked. Evidently if you buy Apple care, even one dead pixel can result in a replacement.

Is that true?

And does that mean you have to buy applecare right away or doesn't the first year warranty give you the same coverage as applecare.

I'm still not sure that is true, when did they change that policy?

You need at least 4 dead or stuck pixels to get a replacement, Applecare or no Applecare.

Often those 4 pixels have to be clustered in one place or in the centre of the screen.

Annoying but true.

However, I wouldn't let this put you off a possible purchase... 'Defects' are a chance you take with any product, especially with a technology like LCDs which are never ever 100%...

Any laptop company could guarantee 100% perfect displays, with no dead pixels at all. Of course, your $999 iBook would cost $3999 at that point...

I used to think this was true. No B.S. at the Apples store here in Pasadena, I was told that w/ one or more dead pixels you'd be eligible for a replacement. They DID say that this was based upon the discretion of the genius bar, but most likely this could be 'helped' by owning Apple care.

I should clarify... DEAD as in BLACK, and not just a stuck pixel which won't display one of the colors prominently.

They are just trying to put you at ease to make you buy.

It would be a whole other story should you try to change a machine with one dead, or stuck pixel. Genius Bar or no genius bar, it just ain't gonna happen...

Peace,

Marc
