I'm just tired of the rainbow rolling ball coming up everytime I click on anything. I need a solution to make access times decrease.

So, if my understanding is correct, my options are

1)7200 RPM HD from Hitachi
2)3.5" 7200RPM HD in Firewire 400 case
3)2.5" 7200RPM HD in Firewire 400 case.

How would I use an external hard drive? If I disconnected it, would the computer boot up using the main hard drive inside the notebook?

Would I see an improvement in photo editing/music editing if I upgraded to an internal 7200RPM HD?

The general consensus is that it's great for a FW800 equipped Albook, but what about the slower computers like mine?

Try maxing out the RAM first!
As far as removing the Startup Disk, I've never done it but I'm sure someone else here has done it.
Or you can just replace the whole damn thing
-My 667DVI is starting to show its age too.

If it's not at 1GIG, it should be! And then pop a 7200rpm drive in there...I've got a 5400rpm/8MB cache aftermarket IBM drive in my 800DVI TiBook and it's extremely fast with disk access.

I have 768MB's ram...why do I need anymore?
