UPDATED POST:

Quick question:

Anyone out there using a 700MHz ibook with monitor spanning and panther? I am getting Panther tomorrow, but don't have the time to dilly-dally around with the monitor spanning issue if it doesn't work. I am in the middle of a thesis that needs to be completed....on the bigger screen of course!

Thanks to any who can help.

Hello El Mago,

I am currently running an iBook (dual usb) which appears to be the same model you have. I updated to Panther a little over an hour ago and have not run across any conflicts using my iBook in mirroring mode (to a television). I cannot tell if you are wondering about mirroring to a monitor or using the extended desktop; if so, I was under the impression using the Open Firmware hack was not possible with our model iBooks (see this page at Xlr8yourmac.com).

Regardless of it working for you or I, this page (also from Xlr8yourmac.com) has a report from an iBook G4 owner that is running the hack under Panther with no problems, so it appears if the hack is working for you as of now, you'd be good to go.

I'm sorry I can't give you a clear yes or no answer at this point!

CAUTION! especially if you have a thesis to write. i do not think that the spanning hack works on the ibook 500s (with 8mb of vram) be very careful, research this one.

read this link

this one too

on a lighter note tho, i have panther running, and the spanning hack still works on my 700mhz with 16 (!) mb of vram.

just wanted to warn you before you kill your ibook, from one student to another.

what you might want to try instead is a virtual desktop program like Desktop manager -its not perfect, but it is free and quite effective.

Seems the thesis has clouded my brain completely...

I have a 700MHz ibook...not 500. Forgive me for the idiocracy.

Same question still applies though.

The hack is in Open Firmware, and has absolutely nothing to do with the OS you have installed. Which means if it works for you now, it'll work for you for 10.4, 10.5, etc.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

Not necessarily. Apple could simply change the driver to ignore that OF variable the "hack" is changing.

Stink different.

Yeah, I have seen a lot of posts about os not changing the OF, etc. I guess I just wanted to play it safe and have some concrete evidence that someone actually was using it. Thanks for all the help and interesting conversation.

I am not sure, I haven't tried that one yet. I was thinking about doing it though for a party so I could run itunes visual through the tv.
