Apple got rid of the floppy drive first and that showed the PC world how to move on.
They got rid of the CRT first.
Did they introduce the first optical mouse?
They jsut seem to do everyting first and then the PC world copies it. Which leads me to believe that apple will never go away because the PC world needs them to show them what to do.
I will be sad the day jobs finall retires or whatever, but I assume apple will always be on the cutting edge.
Now Apple has finally move every computer to the G4 and now the every computer has at least a combo drive.
I hope a year from now everyone will come with a superdrive, but I predict it will take 2 years until that happens.
But I'm excited for it.

No. Microsoft did.
As for the cd-rom, you'd be hard-pressed to find a PC machine made in the last year that didn't come standard with a cd-rw or a combo-drive.
While Apple does a lot of amazing things, elimating the cd-rom from their product line is not one of them and is nowhere near as big of an issue as eliminating the floppy drive since combo drives can still read cd's.

That was some cutting-edge strategy, declaring the CRT dead and then starting to ship a new product with a 17" job as the only option....
I love the eMac, but Apple's necromancy was a tad weird.

for whoever said you would be hard pressed to find a pc with a cd rom, no offense but what pc's are you looking at. most all base configs start with a CD rom then they charge you out the *** to upgrade. One of the reason they advertise such low prices.

Take a look at the entry-level offerings for Toshiba, Sony and Comaq. ALL are combo drives.

Actually I thought HP invented the modern optical mouse, and I know sun had the old kind (with the special pads) long before MS.
Apple DID make optical STANDARD first on a personal computer.

What's next, people excaliming Mac got rid of PC100/PC133 SDRAM and are on DDR RAM?
Sure, you will still find PCs sold with just CDROM or slow SDRAM but that is just not the ROM.
Also, Macs are now all 1 ghz or higer. Finally.

I wonder about that...I worked with a guy who'd been using a laser mouse whose brand name began with 'E' I think...he'd had it since '94 or '95...its mouspad was metal, and had a grid etched into it...
definitely not a m$ product..
It took some getting used to, but it had a very solid, accurate feel to it...
