Read this article should provide the info you need. Turns out your keys will not work if the sensors detect enough ambient light. HTH.

I noticed a quirk tonight when trying to show off the keyboard to someone. It was really dark, and the display had dimmed. But no matter what, the keyboard lighting would not work, kept giving the no symbol after pressing F10. I put the system to sleep and woke it up, and then it worked.

Had it happen again later as well. Seems Panther support for the keyboards is a bit bugged.

Now another quirk. Backlight is off on the keyboard and the F keys display the no symbol. Fast user switch to the login window, keyboard lights up and keys work. Switch back to my logon, F keys display no again, but the backlight is on. It turns off after a minute, and won't turn back on.

If the keyboard works under another user (or at least when you are not the active user), then it looks like you probably have a corrupt preference...

Try remove the file:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.BezelServices.plist

That may fix your problem.

Hmmmm, I've just encountered a different variation of this same problem.

Just woke my PowerBook from sleep and neither the display nor keyboard are "automatically" adjusting themselves. ie I can manually turn up/down the brightness of my display, but covering up the two sensors does nothing. Furthermore the keyboard backlight won't even turn on - if I try using the keyboard to increase the brightness it says its at full brightness.

Was working fine before so am assuming the sleep/wakeup has caused this. Will, ugh, reboot and see what happens...

Well, after three or four more sleeps, my auto keyboard backlight/screen brightness stopped working again - just left it, came back to find the screen saver on, woke it from screen saver and the auto-adjustments suddenly began working again.

Annoying - this is one of quite a few quirks I'm having with Panther.

Something is definitely bollixed as mine works sporadically at best. I tossed the prefs file and logged out and in but that didn't help. For one thing, it won't retain the selection to use keyboard illumination in the system preference pane.

I am having the same problem with my auto dimming monitor and Keyboard. The monitor sometimes works and other times does not, and same with the keyboard. It started after I installed Panther, hopefully there will be a fix out, soon, or something?!?

Maybe we should start posting this at apples site and getting them to notice and get a fix for it soon. I really dont want to have to restart my computer everytime the bakclighting/auto adjusting doesnt work (i use that feature a ton!).

Only putting mine back to sleep and wakinh it up will get the auto-sensing to work. Strange.

A Panther quirk for sure....

Unfortunately, I have to agree that I too just had an incident. I've been fine since Friday...back lighting would come on after sleep without any issues...read this thread (computer was sleeping for more than 24 hours) and backlighting would not come on...as soon as I logged out...bam!, there it was.

Funny thing, when I logged back in, mail and safari would start, but no window would display. I rebooted and everything seems fine again...

A reboot fixed it for me. Was working out how best to return the Mac for warranty service while the reboot was happening...

Very happy when the keys lit up during boot!

I get the same issue too on RevB 17"PB. When I reboot it fixes it but throughout the day after I put it to sleep and wake it up the ALS doesn't work. The screen won't dim and the keyboard won't light up unless I reboot again. Looks like there will be a software update for the 15 and 17" ALbook owners.
No worries, Panther still rocks.

I just noticed I'm having the same problem on a rev A 17" PB. Has a fix been released for this yet?

Negative - just the above workarounds.

One would assume 10.3.2 will fix the various quirks we're all having.

Yea, i have a rev a 17 and this has been happening for a while and its getting really really frustrating!! I thought they would fix it in 10.3.1, but they didnt... I really hope .3.2 help us out. It sucks!

Still broken for me here after 10.3.5. Only works after a reboot.
