Ok, I know there's the 12" PowerBook G4 but I really would rather have a 12" iBook G4 1GHz to replace my 600 Mhz iBook G3. I really can't afford the PowerBook and I'm waiting and saving for a PowerBook G5, so the new iBook will be a nice update without breaking the bank.
The thing is, I really dislike the 14" iBooks. They are big, heavy, and most importantly, they have the same screen resolution and ppi (points per inch) of the old 14.1" Pismo PowerBooks. I really like the pixel density of the 12" iBook screen, as well as the form factor.
I feel like I have no choice if I want the top performing iBook but to buy a 14 incher. I'm disappointed. I never considered the 12" PowerBook, as the 15" is the one I would buy if I were PowerBook shopping. But I'm not PowerBook shopping. I want to buy a 1 GHz 12" iBook G4. There isn't one, so I'm not buying. Anyone else in the same boat?
Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

I was a bit disappointed too when I saw the 12" was stuck at 800mhz (down from 900mhz G3). I don't like the 14" iBook either. I guess you have to wait for 6 months... by then they will probably have the PPC7457 @933/1ghz in the iBook and either faster G4 or G5 in the PowerBook. (I would bet on G5).

Anyway the 800mhz G4 is still a huge update from the 600mhz G3 (consifering you'll have QE, faster video, and faster bus speed)

I think if Apple updates the iBook line come MacWorld Jan. 2004 with 1GHz processors and 768RAM max., then I'll be much more persuaded.

Apple probably did this so iBooks and 12" Powerbooks stay more distinct. There's just a $500 difference ($1100-$1600) between the two. A Ghz 12" iBook might cost $1250 or $1300. At that point, the line between the two begins to blur (even more so than now).
Also, at that point, a 12" Ghz and 14" 933mhz iBook would cost the same. 66mhz/10GB vs 2". There would just be too much overlap.
A 12" Ghz iBook would indeed be an awesome Mac, but it just cause too many problems marketing-wise.

Sorry, I should have explained it better. See my post here. So both the iBook and PowerBook line would see a speed increase.
