I have a 500Mhz Dual USB Icebook that recently died (LCD no loneger working and can't even get VGA monitor output, although computer works.) I waited until Panther came out to buy a new laptop to replace it, and was torn between the PB 12" and PB15". Now I'm considering getting one of these new iBook G4s, or perhaps get the cheapest one and start saving up for a G5 by the middle of next year so the laptop is only used while traveling.

Anyway, as well as advice on what to get, I was wondering if anyone knows if I'll be able to use my 512 RAM chip in these new iBooks. I assumed it wouldn't work in the Powerbooks, and with these new iBooks I suspect I need the fancy DDR RAM. Is that correct?

Thanks!

Thanks for your replies. I guess I'll sell my old RAM unless I get the iBook repaired somehow (I could always use it as a MP3 server or something if I manage to at least partly repair it).

Any thoughts on what I should buy though? I'd appreciate any insights...

I'm a journalist and need a portable for my work occasionally, although most of the time I use it on my desk. Having two computers would be great as otherwise I have no backup machine to work on. And if I can't work, I can't earn...

My girlfriend lent me her new 900Mhz iBook for the week and I must say it's pretty good for speed on the apps I mostly use. Which is why I'm tempted to just go for the 800Mhz G4 iBook, and then maybe buy a G5 when the prices come down. I already own a VGA monitor, keyboard and mouse. It's kind of tempting to save money on the computer and maybe get an AirPort Base Station and DSL (I live in Egypt where it's still expensive.)

So a 200-pin DDR SODIMM would work in these machines?
