Just wondering if any of the old powerbooks have a better screen than the current ibook G4 or the powerbook 12.

I'm looking for a computer that has a nice keyboard to type on and has the brightest screen possible.

I can't afford the 15inch, but that screen is great and I don't want the Ti.

So I was thinking maybe some of the old powerbook G3 have nice bright screens.

I love the screen on the imac 15.

The G3 screen sucked in comparison to the more modern books (Tibook, iBook, new Powerbooks). They also had a tendency to develop problems after a while (pink screen syndrome). So from the point of view of the screen, there is no reason to go with a PBG3. I'd recommend the 12" powerbook. It has a decent screen (not as nice as the 15" from what I hear) and a very nice keyboard.

With all the problems with the 15" ALbook screen I'm bemused at how good the 14" is on my 4+ year old Wall St. Bright and crisp and never a dud pixel in all this time nor any deterioration (and I do a lot of digital photography so I'm picky). No good out of doors though but I assume the modern PBs are the same (on the Dark Side I understand the black onyx screen on new Sony Vaio TR1MP is OK in sunlight).

I prefer it to the one on the Rev A 12", but it could be that I just don't like the font smoothing/smearing under OSX. Always seems blurred. I usually turn off anti-aliasing on my Wall St too except for very large fonts.

Just my 2p from England.

My Albook is noticeably better than my Pismo... look at this pic:

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

One thing I did notice, btw, is the AlBook has much better display of grey shades. On the Pismo they often came out as blue.

Yes, I have calibrated both screens, btw.

Well, I have mentioned it before but I actually sent my 1GHZ 12" BACK because I found the screen was so inferior to my Lombard Sreen in regards to Color saturation, black level and viewing angle. Yew, the 12" is bright but the actual quality is lacking in my opinion. It is most likely the cheaper LG philips screens Apple uses. These are limited to thousands of colors, not millions(yes, 262,144 instead of 32,000) and in the 12" variety have a very slow response time of 45ms and a limited viewing angle of 50/90(degress horizontal and verticle). Here is the link:

I'm very critical though as I am a Photographer BUT I must say that I'm surprised at Apple using cheap LCD screens in their PowerBook line- at least where the 12" is concerned.

Don't get an old machine: bulbs grow dim after a while.

As for getting the best from an Apple LCD, the built-in calibration does NOT do the screens justice. Get SuperCal from versiontracker.com or use the great new calibration tools in Panther.
