Is there a huge difference speedwise between the 2? With the G4, you're losing 100MHz, but gaining DDR and Altivec, so surely, it must be faster, correct? Thanks

here's the xbench comparison I ran on a G3 and G4 ibook (both 800MHz):

http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge....amp;doc2=43350
-> 20" iMac Core Duo, 1GB RAM, lame superdrive that burns at 2x
-> MacBook Pro 2GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM
-> MacBook 2.16GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM

It looks like the G3 is ahead of the G4 in non-altivec tasks, if I'm reading that right.
Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

Are those numbers telling us that the new G4 iBook is about 50% 'better' than the equivalent G3 iBook or am I just over-simplifying??

nah. no way the CPU's are that different. depends on the weighting they use for each test. eg, do you in effect use vecLib FFT as much as Floating Point?

those scores are pretty meaningless in total. line items are interesting (check out the memory allocation differences).

for most apps the difference will be small-ish. altivec optimized apps (including the aspects of the OS itself) will be a good-deal faster.

For stuff like surfing, email, corrspondence, occassional gaming etc. a 900 MHz G3 iBooks is absolutely fast enough, especially with panther. Heck, even my 600 MHz iBook is quite suitable for those tasks, and if it comes down to it, I even do design wirk on this machine. However, that was the reason for me to order a G4 iBook 12". I use mainly Adobe apps, and those take good benefit from the G4.

its incredible what that little menu in energy saver can do.

xbench for the 12" ibook g4 with processor on highest.

if nothing else, this will fuel speculation.

woohoo!

I don't suppose there's anyone out there who can now bench the 900MHz iBook vs. the 800MHz G4.

I have a 900MHz, and I'm contemplating getting a 12" G4 iBook for my wife (sure, right; it's for my wife).
I keep the Bible in a pool of blood so that none of its words can affect me.

Hmm. Thank you, Dan. That Quartz Extreme test is particularly interesting. I was assuming the G4 would give the new iBook an edge there, but obviously I don't understand that feature well enough. I'm surprised that the two machines are so evenly matched. Perhaps I shouldn't be.

it was not hard to set that up. if you play around on the xbench site, you can pair almost any computer.

maybe this is more like it
http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge....amp;doc2=43031

the energy saver settings make a huge difference.
